Hessia

Hessia

Hessia is an old anglicizing of the German word "Hessen", still found in mentions of the Hessian troops fighting as mercenaries on the side of George III in the American Revolution, and in the name of the Hessian fly that came along on their boats. French dominance in the world of 19th century diplomacy made it more usual to spell many German place names in French. While Coblence and Ratisbonne (Koblenz and Regensburg) no longer tend to be spelled in the French style, Cologne and Munich (Köln and München) still are, and "Hessen" and "Hessia" tend to be replaced by Hesse in contemporary English.

Hessia is located in the center of Germany. Its capital is Wiesbaden. Frankurt is its largest city.
