Oberhünigen is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

History

Oberhünigen is first mentioned in 1148 as Huningen superior.[3]

Geography

Oberhünigen has an area, as of 2009, of 6.02 square kilometers (2.32 sq mi). Of this area, 2.33 km2 (0.90 sq mi) or 38.7% is used for agricultural purposes, while 3.43 km2 (1.32 sq mi) or 57.0% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.21 km2 (0.081 sq mi) or 3.5% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.04 km2 (9.9 acres) or 0.7% is either rivers or lakes.[4]

Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 1.5% and transportation infrastructure made up 2.0%. Out of the forested land, all of the forested land area is covered with heavy forests. Of the agricultural land, 11.5% is used for growing crops and 26.2% is pastures. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.[4]

The municipality includes the village of Oberhünigen, the hamlet of Äbersold and individual farm houses on the Kurzenberg. Until 1980 it was an exclave of Schlosswil.

More than half of the municipality is covered by the Toppwald (Topp Forest).

Demographics

Oberhünigen has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 332.[1] As of 2007, 3.1% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 3.8%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (96.3%), with Serbo-Croatian being second most common ( 2.0%) and Dutch being third ( 0.7%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 45.3% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the local small left-wing parties (21.5%), the Green Party (9.9%) and the SPS (9.2%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 25.3% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 60.5% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 14.2%. In Oberhünigen about 73.6% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Oberhünigen has an unemployment rate of 0.43%. As of 2005, there were 46 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 22 businesses involved in this sector. 12 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 4 businesses in this sector. 17 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 4 businesses in this sector.[5] The historical population is given in the following table:[3]
