Mirchel is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

History

Mirchel is first mentioned in 1320 as Mirchlon.[2]

Geography

Mirchel has an area, as of 2009, of 2.35 square kilometers (0.91 sq mi). Of this area, 1.8 km2 (0.69 sq mi) or 76.6% is used for agricultural purposes, while 0.25 km2 (0.097 sq mi) or 10.6% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.31 km2 (0.12 sq mi) or 13.2% is settled (buildings or roads).[3]

Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 5.5% and transportation infrastructure made up 6.0%. Power and water infrastructure as well as other special developed areas made up 1.3% of the area Out of the forested land, all of the forested land area is covered with heavy forests. Of the agricultural land, 51.9% is used for growing crops and 19.6% is pastures, while 5.1% is used for orchards or vine crops.[3]

It is located in the upper Kiesental (Kiesen Valley) and includes the village of Mirchel, the hamlet of Gmeis and scattered farm house clusters and isolated farm houses.

Demographics

Mirchel has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 571.[1] As of 2007, 0.2% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 8.5%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (99.2%), with English being second most common ( 0.4%) and French being third ( 0.2%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 61.2% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (9.9%), the Green Party (8.7%) and the local small left-wing parties (7.6%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 24.6% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 61.7% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 13.6%. In Mirchel about 78.1% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Mirchel has an unemployment rate of 0.78%. As of 2005, there were 59 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 23 businesses involved in this sector. 6 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 4 businesses in this sector. 69 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 14 businesses in this sector.[4] The historical population is given in the following table:[2]
