Paper Heart Gallery

Paper Heart Gallery

Paper Heart Gallery is an all-ages music venue, art gallery, and performance space in downtown Phoenix, Arizona, USA. It is located on Grand Avenue, between 7th Avenue and Polk Street.

Owner and operator Scott Sanders created The Paper Heart as a website in 2000 in order to publicize artists and to exhibit and sell their work. In 2001, Sanders opened a gallery in downtown Phoenix at 5th Avenue and Van Buren Street. The Paper Heart exhibited artists, but also held poetry and spoken word events, stand-up comedy, improv performances, and performance art, as well as concerts for local and national touring acts. The Paper Cup, a coffee bar, was run in the space by JRC and Stephanie Carrico. In 2004, the facility moved to its current location, which includes an exhibition space, performance space, and studios for artists. When JRC and Carrico parted ways with The Paper Heart to open the Trunk Space, Sanders opened a bar inside the gallery.

The Paper Heart is a stop in the city's First Friday Art Walk program. It hosts Shizz Second Saturdays, a music event put on by the website of the same name. The Paper Heart also hosts a weekly poetry and spoken word event called "PAINT", a monthly b-movie night, Modest Proposal Presents (a monthly stand-up comedy and sketch comedy night hosted by the comedy duo of the same name), and a monthly performance by improv troupe Galapagos.

The Paper Heart Gallery has been featured in the "Phoenix New Times" and the "Arizona Republic".

It was announced in early October 2006 that the Paper Heart Gallery would close at the end of the year due to financial strife. Despite several benefit shows that prolonged the life of the venue, it was announced in late 2007 that the gallery's final exhibit would be held December 7, 2007, and the venue's final performance is scheduled for December 29, 2007.
