Since January 2008 he has been unable to officiate for them, due to injury. Career

Knight first took up the whistle in 1978, and in 1991 he became a Southern League referee.

In 1995 he was promoted to the list of referees for the Football League. [ [http://www.premierleague.com/fapl.rac?command=setSelectedId&nextPage=enRefereesProfile&id=2935&type=com.fapl.website.stories.SimpleStories&categoryCode=Referees Biographical details] : Premier League Official website.]

He was included on the FA Premier League list of referees from 1999. His first appointment in this competition was the game between Wimbledon and Middlesbrough on 10 August 1999 at Selhurst Park - a 2-3 away win. In May 2000 during a Division One Play-off semi-final between Bolton Wanderers and Ipswich Town at Portman Road he handed out 12 yellow cards and two red cards to Bolton with not a single card to Ipswich and also saw fit to award Ipswich three penalties. In the year 2001, he took charge of the FA Youth Cup Final, a 6-3 win for Arsenal against Blackburn. [ [http://www.thefa.com/TheFACup/TheFAYouthCup/History/Postings/2002/07/15018.htm FA Youth Cup Final 2001] : TheFA.com website.]

He was the referee who sent off team-mates Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer, of Newcastle United, after they fought during a match against Aston Villa at St. James' Park, which they eventually lost 3-0. His contribution to Premiership officiating stopped suddenly after Blackburn's 2-1 home win over Birmingham on October 22 2005 due to a knee ligament injury he had suffered, and which took much time to recover from. Knight returned to action on March 17 2007 by fulfilling a fourth official posting in the Premier League (Reading v. Portsmouth). He fully returned to active top class refereeing on August 11 2007, when he took charge of the 2-1 away win by Leyton Orient at Southend in League One, during which he dismissed the home side's Alan McCormack. [ [http://www.soccerbase.com/results3.sd?gameid=524871 Return] to active top class refereeing, 2007: soccerbase.com website.] However, before Knight was able to make a return to Premier League refereeing his injury re-occurred after a game on 28 August. He recovered once again to take charge of only his fourth Football League game of the 2007-08 season in early January 2008, the 1-0 victory by Bradford City at Accrington Stanley. [ [http://www.soccerbase.com/results3.sd?gameid=520533 First Football League game since injury] , Accrington Stanley v.
