Baron Poynings

Baron Poynings

The title of Baron Poynings was created twice in the Peerage of England.

The first creation was for Thomas Poynings, who was summoned to parliament on 23 April 1337. On the death of the fifth baron in 1446, it was inherited by his heiress, Eleanor Percy, née Poynings, who was married to Sir Henry Percy, who was summoned to parliament on her behalf and died in 1461; on her death in 1482, she was succeeded by their heir, who was summoned to parliament as Lord Percy in 1473, when he was restored to the earldom of Northumberland with which titles the barony then merged until the extinction of the earldom in 1670, when the baronies seemed either to fall into abeyance or to become extinct.

The second creation was for another Thomas Poynings, who was summoned to parliament on 20 January 1545. On his death in the same year's summer, the barony became extinct.
