Laurel True, (1968) American artist, architectural artist, muralist and mosaic artist.
True, founder of one of the first formal mosaic institutes in the United States,
Institute of Mosaic Art , was born inAnn Arbor, Michigan . After being awarded a Bachelors of Art in African Art and Cultures from theUniversity of Wisconsin-Madison , True traveled the world studying art. In 1990 she apprenticed with outsider mosaic artist,Isaiah Zagar and began a solid career/ life in mosaic creation. Now a mosaic artist in theSan Francisco Bay Area , True's work is known throughout the world.True's career began with commission work that soon led to large-scale public and private mosaic art works. True continued doing architectural mosaic work as well as mosaic fine art throughout the 90s. She began teaching courses in mosaic technique in
1994 . She traveled to Italy to study traditional mosaic setting techniques in2000 . In2001 True collaborated with a non-profit inGhana , West Africa. She travels there frequently to work on large-scale mosaic projects involving the local community.Much of True's artwork reflects her love of travel, world cultures, the decorative arts and the urban landscape. She currently resides in
