Heathfield Community College is a secondary school located just outside the market town of Heathfield in the heart of the Wealden district of East Sussex. The school is a specialist Arts College.

chool Enrollment

It draws its students from a large geographical area including the villages of Cross-in-Hand, Horam, Mayfield and Burwash. There are currently over 1400 students on roll with approximately 250 in the 6th Form. Its current Headteacher is Alan Powell. With Mr. Pooley as Head of Y7, Mrs. Storey as Head of Y8 and Mr. Backshall as Head of Y9. Including Mrs. Hatton as Head of Sixth Form. The college works very closely with its family of primary feeder schools (Broad Oak, Burwash, Cross in Hand, Dallington, Five Ashes, Old Heathfield, Herstmonceux, Mayfield, Maynards Green, Parkside and Punnetts Town).

Founded in 1950, the school was initially envisioned to include an average of 800 students, but the college now finds itself receiving an average enrollment of 1,400 students between the ages of 11-18 years old.

Heathfield Community College is separated into two sections, Secondary School and 6th Form College.

Virtual Learning Environment

A few months ago, the school initiated a Virtual Learning Environment based on the Moodle Content Management System (CMS). Which currently has courses that all students can take, such as ICT, Maths, German, Spanish, etc. Students can edit their profile and can manage their own blog for an addition to the fun of the VLE.

Library

Last year, in 2007 - The new library opened which is opposite the ICT Block, it contains 30 computers that are used for work uses only and over 12,000 books available that students can loan and keep for a certain time. The library is managed by Mrs. Alison Bending, it is open at break time, lunch time and also until 4:30 after school. Students also have the choice to sign up to become a Library Helper's Assistant, to help run the library at Break or Lunch.

pecialist Status

Since the year 2003, Heathfield Community College has been a Specialist College in the Visual and Performing Arts. This provides funding for the college to be used for The Arts.
