Chandigarh Tricity

The Union Territory of Chandigarh along with its two satellite cities - Panchkula (Haryana) and Mohali (Punjab) and the cantonment of Chandimandir (in Panchkula district) is collectively called as the Chandigarh Tricity. There is a proposal by the Punjab government to build a metro for this region covering the 3 cities,Ropar Dera Bassi and Kalka along with Baddi. Covering territory in the Union Territory, Punjab,Himachal and Haryana.

Population

The combined population of the three cities was 1165111 (1.16 million) as per the 2001 census.

Industry

Dera Bassi - Lalru is another belt with mostly medium industry, this place has many spinning mills including the Nahar group. Bushan Steel also has a presence here.

Hindustan Machine Tools has a tractor factory in Pinjore, while Associated Cement Companies has a cement factory in Pinjore. Bharat Electronics Limited or B.E.L has a factory in Panchkula.

Punwire and Puncom have factories in Mohali as does Verka, and Ranbaxy and Godrej.This region is the zonal headquarters for a large number of banks, their offices are mainly in the "Bank Square" in sector 17 Chandigarh. This area also houses the regional office (usually covering Punjab, Northern Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir) for a lot of FMCG companies.

In the service industry, Dell, Quark and Infosys are the key players with a presence here.
