Presidio

Presidio

A Presidio was a fortified base established by the Spanish in North Africa during the 16th century to protect against pirates, or a base held by Spain in the 16th and 17th centuries in Italy, mostly on the Tuscan coast (Piombino, Orbetello, Talamone, Porto Ercole & Porto Stefano, plus Porto Longone on Elba). They would also protect from attacks of the Native Americans. Presidios were located in the southern United States as well:

* The Presidio Santa Maria de Galve, founded in 1696, was near Fort Barrancas at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida
* The Presidio of Goliad, founded in 1721, near Lavaca Bay in Texas.
* The Presidio of Monterey, a military facility, founded in 1770 and currently housing the Defense Language Institute, in Monterey, California
* The Presidio of San Diego, founded in 1769 in San Diego, California

* The Presidio of San Francisco, a former military facility, founded in 1776 and now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in San Francisco, California
* The Presidio of Santa Barbara, a former military facility, founded in 1782 in Santa Barbara, California
* The Presidio of Sonoma, or "Sonoma Barracks", established in 1836 by Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo (the "Commandante-General of the Northern Frontier of Alta California") in Sonoma, California as a part of Mexico's strategy to halt Russian incursions into the region.
* The Presidio San Ignacio de Tubac was founded in June of 1752 in Tubac, Arizona
* The Presidio San Augustín de Tucson was founded in 1775 in Tucson, Arizona
* The Presidio Santa Cruz de Terrenate was founded in 1776 near Tombstone, Arizona
