History

Dr Vikram Sarabhai and a few other public spirited industrialists realized that agriculture, education, health, transportation, population control, energy, and public administration were all vital elements in a growing society and that it was necessary to link these meaningfully with industry. The result was the creation of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad in 1961 as an autonomous body with the active collaboration of the Government of India, Government of Gujarat, and industry.

IIM-A was conceived not to be purely a business school, but a school of management. Its mission is to professionalise Indian management through teaching, research, training, institution building and consulting. It also aims to professionalize some of the vital sectors of India's economy.

In its formative years, IIM-A collaborated with the Harvard Business School (HBS). Largely as a consequence of this collaboration, IIM-A pioneered the case method of teaching in India. It has however retained its own style, and thus provides a confluence of the best of Eastern and Western values.

Campus

Architecture

“Every time a student walks past a really urgent, expensive piece of architecture that belongs to his college, it can help reassure him that he does have that mind, does have that soul.” These are the words of Louis Kahn, the genius responsible for this great architectural work. Louis Kahn, the American architect, was an exponent of exposed-brick architecture. The most distinctive feature of the plan was the numerous arches and square brick structures with circles carved out in the facade. These arches were first constructed by the architect himself and later on taught it to the workers on site. Those original prototypes could be found in the residential areas even today.Huge open spaces depict the freedom thought, the principles that this institute stand for. Even the classrooms have been designed to facilitate students’ participation in the class. The most awe-inspiring and photographed view is that of the main academic block which is built as a huge monolith. The dorms are connected to the main complex by a series of arched corridors and landscaped courts. The 132 feet long underpass connects the old campus to the new. There is a stark contrast between the new campus and the old. The new campus which came into being only a few years ago has a starkly different architecture from the one at the old campus. The rooms here much more spacious and each dorm is home to a larger number of students.

Vikram Sarabhai Library

The library is named after Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, world renowned physicist and founder Director. The main objective of VSL is to provide information support to Teaching, Research, Consulting and learning.Total area of the library is 20120 sq.ft. and total seating capacity is 210 including 50 open carrels. The collection consists of 1,65,800 books, 38,750 bound volumes of periodicals, 1,975 Working papers, 225 dissertations of FPM students, 126 Educational Video Cassettes, 1340 CDs (of books, databases, training etc), and subscription to 510 print journals

Ravi J Matthai Centre for Educational Innovation(RJMCEI) Auditorium

This is the biggest auditorium in campus with a capacity of 500. Most of the talks and presentation by reputed business leaders and other national figures are held here. It also hosts several events during Confluence and Chaos.

Classrooms

There are eleven classrooms and ten seminar rooms distributed between the old and new campuses. This is in addition to the seminar and conference rooms in the faculty wings. First year classes are held in the classrooms in new campus. The spacious classrooms are designed to facilitate effective group discussions and communication and come equipped with multimedia facilities, networked computer, air conditioning and excellent acoustics. The fixed seating arrangement and swivel chairs permit the students to interact effectively with every person in the room.

Dorm Culture

Students in IIMA reside in 25 dorms which are distributed between the old and new campuses. The number of rooms in a dorm varies from 20 to 40 which house the PGP1s (first year students), PGP2s (second year students) and FPMs (PhD students). Students are allocated to dorms on a random basis and care is taken to ensure that people from diverse backgrounds – engineers, commerce grads, arts majors, architects, CAs – are present to provide a rich learning experience to the students. The dorm is the epicenter of all activity in IIMA. It forms a distinct, independent unit and is one place that remains close to one’s heart forever. Every dorm has its own culture, established by the alumni. The dorms have their own identity, their own idiosyncrasies, and that makes it a fun place to be in. Dorm birthday celebrations at IIMA form one of the most cherished memories for years to come.

tudent Activities

IIMA is not only about academics. The clubs and the special interest groups on campus will give you avenues to enrich your stay here beyond the confines of the classroom and curriculum. These associations cover diverse interests from finance and marketing to literature, theatre and nature. These clubs organize various events and workshops throughout the year, to ensure that the extra-curricular scene is always dynamic and exciting. Apart from providing an avenue for students to showcase their immense talents, these clubs also encourage students to take initiative in organizing events and set new standards of excellence.IIMA has a number of clubs like Beta – the finance club, Consult Club, Niche – the Marketing club, the Entre Club, Forum for Industry Interaction, the Faculty Student Interaction Cell, Genesys, the Literary Symposiums Desk, IIMACTS – the theatre society, and Stargazers – the astronomy club.

Events

Talent Nite (August)

Talent Nite, or Tnite as it’s popularly known is the most celebrated event on campus across generations of students. The one time when IIM A throbs with energy of a different kind is this. Meant to give first years an outlet for their creative juices, Tnite sees the emergence of many an artiste.

The current T-Nite holders are Section-B (Bichhoos) who won back this cultural flagship event under their Class Representative Perseus Patrawala after a period of 20 years. The slogan "B's Saal" is now synonymous with victory through adversity.

Combos (October - November)

Combos – the intra –institute sports, literary and cultural competition is a month long celebration of competitive spirit at IIM A and the students’ desire to excel. Over 400 students put their gauntlet into the arena and pit their wits and might in treasure hunt and quizzes to cricket, football, badminton and Frisbee. The gala signs off with a final night during which a skit, tug-of-war and Antakshari are organized

Insight: The Marketing Fair (October)

Insight is the annual market research festival of IIM, Ahmedabad. Insight is an excellent opportunity to have purposeful market research done by the brightest brains. Insight is a popular annual fair where thousands of people with varied profile play specially designed games to gauge consumer preferences influencing their buying behavior. As consumers themselves are unaware of the real reasons affecting their buying choice, these games try to bring out the deep latent psychological cause of consumer behavior.

Confluence - International B-School Fest (November)

From a modest start in 1999, Confluence has come a long way to eventually become an event of pristine importance, occupying space in the itineraries and dockets of the managerial intelligentsia the world over. In its ninth avatar, Confluence 2007 gave participants from all corners of the world an opportunity to interact and exchange ideas exploring the dynamics of the unique business environment in India. An event of grand scale and significance, Confluence 2007 was graced by the presence of eminent speakers and leading industrialists. Lecture talks from luminaries in their respective fields and panel discussions saw ideas being raised, challenged and debated.

Chaos - Inter Institute Cultural Event (January)

The USP of this cultural festival is non-stop ‘entiretainment’ and gives people the chance to indulge in a wild and wacky weekend of revelry. Drawing large crowds from all over the country, this fest has something in store for everyone. It features a gamut of cultural events, ranging from the choreographed dances and fashion parades to debates, quizzes, rock competitions, and plays. A number of workshops are conducted and offer the opportunity to learn something new, like rock-climbing or pottery. Pop, rock and classical music concerts create an electric atmosphere and give people the chance to let their hair down.

Faculty

The reputation of IIMA owes much to the exceptional calibre of its faculty. The Institute prides itself on creating an environment of substantial academic freedom overlaid by rigorous, self-imposed standards of excellence and socially responsive practices.

The faculty willingly submit themselves to a unique, rigorous, open, and continuous process of appraisal and feedback from the students. This enables the faculty to fine tune course contents and delivery mechanisms. Through a variety of committees, the faculty play a hands-on role in the governance of the Institute and assume total ownership of collective decisions.

Focus areas in faculty research include social marketing, productivity, women’s issues, human resource development, optimization models, organizational learning, institution building, management and leadership excellence, and public sector management. While some research is internally driven, several projects are commissioned and funded by national and international organizations such as the Ford Foundation, UNO, World Bank, NCERT, Planning Commission, Central and State ministries, and industrial agencies.

Programmes

Post Graduate Programme in Management

The Post-Graduate Programme is the most prestigious curriculum at IIMA. The programme nurtures world-class managers by exposing them to real life unstructured situations along with analytical tools and business philosophies. Participants discover their true potential after rigorous and focused hard work. Students gain conceptual insights into managerial decision-making while at the same time fine tuning their interpersonal skills.

The Institute has initiated exchange programmes with more than twenty-five foreign Institutions of equal repute. Every year the Institute selects close to a quarter of the students to spend one term at some of these institutes. The students get to benefit from the rich exposure that they receive. Similarly students from the corresponding institutes visit IIMA for a term. Joint activities provide each school with a better understanding of teaching methods they practice and give them a better poise. Students learn to appreciate diverse cultures and working environments and develop a holistic vision.

Another important aspect of the PGP is the Summer internship. This eight-week programme provides the students an opportunity to work with reputed companies from various sectors where they get to put their ideas and skills to work.

Some of the best companies, in India and the world, visit the campus every year in search of the best talent in the field. Close to 6000 graduates of the PGP course have reached high positions in a number of reputed corporations and institutes.

Post Graduate Programme in Agri-Business Management

The Post Graduate Programme in Agri-Business Management (PGP-ABM), equivalent to MBA, is a unique programme specially designed to enhance the quality of management in the food and agribusiness sector, and help this sector meet the challenges of the evolving market place. The one year Post Graduate Programme in Management for Executives (PGPX) is aimed at experienced executives who wish to acquire formal training in management. The goal is to prepare participants to be ready to take leadership positions in the firms that they join.

Fellow Programme in Management

The Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) is the doctoral programme of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. The objective of the programme is to provide students with necessary skills to identify and research complex issues in the field of management.

Faculty Development Programme

The Faculty Development Programme (FDP) is specially designed for teachers, researchers and industrial organizations for their management education requirements. Every year, hundreds of sponsored participants enhance their skills and update their pedagogical tools. They practice and share their new learning with thousands of students slowly bringing about a major qualitative change in academics and practice.

Management Development Programme

For the academic year June 2008- May 2009, more than 40 MDPs have been planned. This list includes the flagship MDPs like the 3-TP (3-Tier Programme) and the MDP for small and medium enterprises (SMEP). These MDPs know as General Management Programmes (GMPs) which are designed with the objective of providing insights into managerial concepts and techniques relevant for formulating and implementing strategies in functional areas. Besides GMPs, the Institute’s MDPs are offered as open enrollment programmes and are designed to address specialized needs in areas such as business policy, communications, economics, finance, marketing, organizational behaviour, personnel and industrial relations, and so on. In response to the growing challenges of globalized world, the institute collaborates with world renowned business schools like Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, ESSEC Business School, Paris-Singapore and Alliant University, USA to offer uniquely phased joint MDPs in India and abroad. Over the years, more than 42,500 managers have benefited from the 1,200 MDPs conducted by IIMA.

Alumni

One of the most powerful assets IIMA has built over the years is its alumni network. The alumni family is an important component for realising the goals of the Institute – the creation, application and dissemination of management knowledge. In fact, they are the crucial change agents, who transform leadership. The Institute’s activities and programmes for its alumni are directed towards building lifelong bonds of kinship with the Institute.

A vast number of IIMA Alumni have distinguished themselves in almost every aspect of management across the world. The IIMA Alumni Association was formally established in 1967 with a central executive committee and chapters in major cities in India as well as US, Singapore, UK, and Muscat.
