Maduranthakam (Tamil: மதுராந்தகம்) is a town and a municipality in Kancheepuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The town is known for the man-made and second largest lake in Tamil Nadu, the Maduranthakam Lake. It is believed to be built by the Chola King Uthama Choza, also called as Maduranthakar, during his reign. It is also home to the Aeri Katha Ramar Temple.

Surrounding places

12 km north-west of Maduranthakam lies the famous Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary, home to many rare and endangered species of migratory birds.

Near to Railway Station is Sri Meenakshi Sametha Venkateswarar Temple.

Nearly 15 km from Maduranthakam is the village of Madavilagam. It is known for Sri Kokilamba sametha Kaameswara Swami Shiva temple. As the name of the deity implies, prayers are offered in this temple for childless couples and people suffering from sexual disorders.

Demographics

As of the 2001 India census^[1], Maduranthakam had a population of 29,100. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Maduranthakam has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 64%. 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Politics

Maduranthakam assembly constituency is part of Chengalpattu (Lok Sabha constituency).^[2]
