Karamadai is a panchayat town in Coimbatore district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Geography

Karamadai is located at coord|11.27|N|76.97|E| [ [http://www.fallingrain.com/world/IN/25/Karamadai.html Falling Rain Genomics, Inc - Karamadai] ] . It has an average elevation of 353 metres (1158 feet).

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Karamadai had a population of 27,799. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Karamadai has an average literacy rate of 73%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 79%, and female literacy is 67%. In Karamadai, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age. The place karamadai is about 24km from coimbatore its also an easy destination spot located at the reachable distance for the people of Coimbatore, Tirupur , Ooty, Metupalayam etc. The famous Ranganathar temple in karamadai is located at the center of the town.

History of the temple:

'Thottiyars' clan of people lived at Karamadai. A cow of one of the thottiars failed to yield milk all of a sudden. He found out that the cow was shedding milk at a bush. Enraged, he started to cut it and heard an exploding sound and saw blood gushing from inside. On hearing this, the other people in the village came there and found a 'Suyambu Lingam' inside the bush. The same night God appeared in the dream of him and asked him to adorn the 'Lingam' with 'Chandana Kaapu'. It is believed that the lingam 'Ranganathar Suyambu' is growing in size every year.
