Conception

A series 2 character, Jake appears in three episodes after first being introduced in "Rise of the Cybermen". Jake is a resistance fighter for "the Preachers", the heroes of an alternate universe beseeched by Cyberman occupation. Another layer to the character never made it to British television screens. Russell T Davies had originally intended Jake to be gay, [cite web|last=Kilkelly|first=Daniel|title=Davies wanted 'Doctor Who' gay kiss|publisher=digitalspy.co.uk|date=May 7th, 2006|url=http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds32633.html] although a scene explicitly indicating this was cut from the the broadcast of "The Age of Steel". The deleted scene from this episode was included in the Season 2 box set, where is seen Jake referring to the now-deceased Ricky as his boyfriend, much to Mickey's surprise. [cite video

Character history

Jake is first seen in "Rise of the Cybermen", warning people not to be fooled by John Lumic and Cybus Industries. He then mistakes Mickey Smith for his friend and leader, Ricky, Mickey's alternative-universe self. He and Mrs Moore soon find out Mickey's real identity when the real Ricky shows up. Going to a party hosted by Pete Tyler and hoping to find Lumic there, Jake witnesses the coming of the Cybermen and is surrounded, together with the Tenth Doctor, Rose Tyler, Pete and Mickey, until the Doctor disintegrates the Cybermen and they are rescued by Mrs Moore.

Jake's loyalty and deep friendship with Ricky becomes apparent in "The Age of Steel" when Ricky is killed by the Cybermen. Jake initially resents Mickey for surviving the same attack, but grows to accept and respect him after Mickey shows considerable courage and resourcefulness by destroying the transmitter that was keeping every human wearing an EarPod under hypnotic control and then cracking the Cybermen's emotional inhibitor code.

Jake returned in "Doomsday", where he, Mickey, Pete Tyler and others found a way through a breach between the two Earths, using technology developed by their world's version of the Torchwood Institute. He aided in the battle against the Daleks and the Cybermen on Rose's Earth before returning to his Earth.
