Anson Greene Phelps

Anson Greene Phelps (March 24, 1781 – November 30, 1853) was a co-founder of mining company Phelps Dodge, which he founded in 1833 along with his son-in-law William E. Dodge.

Early years

Born in Simsbury, Connecticut in 1781, his mother died when he was 12 years old, after which he was raised in the house of the minister of Simsbury. He married Olivia Egleston, daughter of Elihu and Elizabeth Egleston on October 26th 1806.

Career

In 1812 he moved to New York City and began doing business with Elisha Peck under the firm name of Phelps, Peck & Co. They dealt in metals, iron, brass, etc.

They were successful in their business and accumulated a large fortune. The firm was dissolved in about 1828, and Phelps organized the Phelps Dodge Company together with his son-in-law William Earl Dodge and other family members.

Family

His son was Anson G. Phelps Jr.A grandson was Anson Phelps Stokes, and a great-grandson, a philanthropist, was also named Anson Phelps Stokes.

Death

He died November 30th 1853 at his residence on the East River and was buried in his family vault in the New York Marble Cemetery. He was later removed to Green-Wood Cemetery.
