The American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA), is a college conservatory for the performing arts located New York City, New York, and in Los Angeles, California. The Conservatory offers both a two-year, Certificate in Professional Performance and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees. The two-year Certificate in Professional Performance and Bachelor's Degree programs are offered in both Musical Theatre and Acting.

AMDA is an accredited institution of the National Association of Schools of Theatre. Many great performing arts specialists serve as instructors, and the school offers four programs of study: Integrated (Musical Theatre), Studio (Theater/Film), Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting.

Notable Faculty includes: Emily Skinner, Teri Ralston, Elaine Petricoff, Mark Santoro, Casey Colgan, Evan Pappas, Marcia Milgrom Dodge, Kathy Morath, Regina O'Malley, Ray Virta, Lars Rosager, Lindsay Chambers, Eileen Schauler, Michael Sartor, Brooks Almy, Danny Gurwin, Jane Lanier, Jameson Jones, Karen Morrow, Deborah Ross Sullivan and Chryssie Whitehead.

History

AMDA was founded in 1964 by Phillip Burton along with other prominent people from the New York theatre community to provide practical training for the actor. Mr. Burton was an acting teacher and is best known as having trained his adopted son, Richard Burton. AMDA's conservatory program is designed to prepare students to work professionally as an actor in theatre, musical theatre, dance, film and television.

Campuses

The New York City campus is located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The principal facility is located at 211 West 61st Street, directly behind Lincoln Center. The other half of the campus is located at the historical Ansonia building, where Ziegfeld once lived, on West 73rd Street.

The Los Angeles campus is located in the heart of the Hollywood Entertainment District, one block north of Hollywood Blvd. and Vine Street, adjacent to the Capitol Records Tower, with its principal facility in the historic Vine Tower Building.
