Theatre Royal, Plymouth

The Theatre Royal in Plymouth is a major producing and receiving house consisting of a large main auditorium housing west end musicals, opera and ballet and also a smaller experimental theatre called 'The Drum'.

The Theatre Royal seats 1315, but has a unique ability to compress the auditorium, creating a more intimate performance space of 787. The range of work presented and produced is incredibly extensive and includes major touring drama and musical productions as well as welcoming leading opera and dance companies to the South West (including Birmingham Royal Ballet, Rambert Dance Company, Glyndebourne On Tour and Welsh National Opera).

The Theatre Royal also produces its own drama and musical productions each year, usually with commercial or subsidised partners and many tour nationally or transfer to the West End.

The Drum Theatre (capacity - 200) is an exceptional venue in the South West and has built a national reputation (two nominations for The Peter Brook Empty Space Award) for the quality of its programme and its innovative and cutting-edge work in the fields of new writing and physical theatre. We often collaborate with other subsidised companies and venues like the Royal Court, ATC, the Lyric Hammersmith, the Bush Theatre, Frantic Assembly, Hampstead Theatre, Paines Plough, the Traverse Theatre and the Tron Glasgow.
