This entry tracks and ranks the population of the largest cities in the United States by decade, starting with the 1790 Census. 1790

By 1790, New York had overtaken Philadelphia as the largest city in the United States, a rank it continues to hold to this day. The source population numbers for this list come from the first United States Census Bureau.ref|1790list
