Gerard began his career with the
FC Barcelona youth system. In 1996-97 he made his professional debut with Barça B. As a 17 year old he was signed byValencia CF . He debuted in the Primera División on August 31, 1997. He appeared in 11 matches his first season with Valencia. For the 1998-99 season Gerard was loaned toDeportivo Alaves . He would go on to have a breakout season scoring 7 goals in 29 appearances for the club. After a successful season with Alaves, Gerard returned toValencia CF helping the club reach the Champions League final. During this time he came to be regarded as one of the top players in Spain and in theChampions League . After receiving interest from several of the top clubs in Europe including Inter Milan,AC Milan andManchester United , Gerard decided to join his former clubFC Barcelona in a deal worth £13million. Gerard would go on to appear in 91 league matches for the Catalan side during his 5 years with the club, as injuries began to curtail his career.After leaving Barça he played for a season with Monaco and then came back to Spain to join Recreativo.After leaving Recreativo he did not get an interesting proposal so he remained a free agent.
In the meanwhile he is keeping fit by training with Granollers, a team which plays in
Preferent Territorial de Catalunya .He is currently on a trial with Sheffield Utd. being one of the rumored clubs interested in signing him. It looks like he is not going to sign with them because of his interest to join a team from the MLS.
National Team
Gerard has represented Spain on six occasions netting two goals. He was a member of Spain's Euro 2000 squad.
