Wayland Middle School is an American public middle school located in Wayland, Massachusetts. The current principal is Mr. John Kavalesky , and the assistant principal is Betsy Garon. Kavalesky has said he will retire (at the end of the 2008-2009 school year). There were 750 students enrolled in the 2008-2009 year.

History

For many years the Middle School ( then called the Junior High School ) had been located in Wayland Center in what is now the Wayland Town Building. By the late 1960s, school officials were becoming very concerned with the building's deteriorating condition and started planning for a new building around 1969. Originally, plans called for demolishing the existing Junior High and the new building be bult over its footprint. However, the Wayland town administration was interested in larger spaces and said they would occupy the old building. As a result, a new site was selected on Route 27 by Cochituate Village. Construction began on the new school in 1971 and was completed in the fall on 1972. The building was a large rectangle, with classroom spaces concentrated on the far end and all other functions on the opposite end with a gymnasium anchor. The school originally housed 7th and 8th grade until about 1980 when 6th grade was moved from Wayland's three elementary schools. The school was given a small renovation in the early 1990s.

2000-2002 Renovation

By the late 1990s, the building was showing it's age and lacked space for Wayland's increasing student population. In 1999 the Wayland School Committee appointed a Middle School Building Committee to investigate possible options. The ultimate decision was to build a twelve classroom addition, a new auditorium and renovate the existing building. Construction began with the new classroom wing which was ready by the fall of 2001. The next phase included renovating all existing spaces as well as adding the new theater. The entire project was finished in the fall of 2002.

School Structure and Curriculum

This school is a large co-educational school that serves 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. The grades are divided into three clusters. 6th grade is the Henry, David, and, Thoreau. 7th grade is Rachel, Louise, and, Carson. The 8th grade clusters are Martin, Luther, and, King. The children in a certain cluster learn about and go on a field trip relating to their cluster person. During each grade, the students go on a major field trip. In 6th grade, students sleep over at the Museum of Science in Boston and go to Walden Pond. In 7th grade, students travel to Cape Cod for several days. In 8th grade, students ride a train to Washington, D.C. where they stay for a week. Wayland Middle School 8th graders also take a field trip to explore caves in upstate New York.

There is a student newspaper, called [http://www.theorangeandblack.net/ The Orange and Black ] . There are many clubs, including Math Team, Orchestra, 6th Grade Chorus, 7th and 8th Grade Chorus, Select Chorus, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, and Stage Band. The Science Olympiad, the National Geographic Bee and Le Grand Concours AATF National French Contest are extramural contests at the school.

The music programs at the school are considered excellent; the Jazz Band usually earns high honors, the vocal program often has students continue on to Junior Districts, and the Orchestra and Honors Chambers also have members in Junior Districts. The Drama Department usually puts on an annual fall Shakespeare play and a spring musical. In past years, the Art Department has also written a musical rendition of Twelfth Night, which will be published soon.

The Wayland Middle School also houses many different types of Metrowest activities, as you can see here. [http://youtube.com/watch?v=5XUAcfl0J4g COLAP Annual Meeting Performance] Members from all over the Metrowest attended, and was directed by Maddie Sifantus.
