Kōtoku Line

The nihongo|Kōtoku Line|高徳線|"Kōtoku-sen" is one of the main railway lines of the Shikoku Railway Company (JR Shikoku) in Japan. It connects the prefectural capitals of Takamatsu in Kagawa Prefecture and Tokushima in Tokushima Prefecture on the island of Shikoku. Its route hugs the northeastern coast of the island. Its name includes one kanji from each of the terminals: 高 ("kō", the "taka" of Takamatsu) and 徳 ("toku" from Tokushima).

The name of Sanuki Province, the province that preceded the modern prefecture of Kagawa, appears in the names of some stations on the line.

History

*1899: The Tokushima Railways Company opens the first segment.
*1907: The company is nationalized.
*1986: Freight operations ended.
*1987: With the privatization of JNR, the line becomes part of the Shikoku Railway Company.
*1988: Line name changed from Kōtoku Main Line to Kōtoku Line.
