- Asiatic mode of production
In the theory of
historical materialism, the term Asiatic mode of production describes a widespread pre-Capitalist mode of production, in which irrigation agricultureplays an important role in society. Oriental despotismis considered to arise out of this mode of production. The term was probably created by Karl Marx, and reflects the conception of the world at that time. According to current Marxist research, however the term is less clearly defined, not just in Asiaas the term indicates.
