The Kuban flows 870 km north and west from its source near
Mount Elbrusin the Caucasus Mountains, eventually reaching the Sea of Azov. The area of its drainage basin is 57,900 km². It is navigable along most of its length. Cities and towns along the Kuban are Karachayevsk, Cherkessk, Nevinnomyssk, Armavir, Ust-Labinsk, Krasnodarand Temryuk. Slavyansk-na-Kubaniis actually not on the Kuban River, but on the Protoka River.
