Tommy Dunne (born 21 May, 1974 in Toomevara, County Tipperary) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his local club Toomevara and was a member of the Tipperary senior inter-county team from 1994 until 2005.

Playing career

Club

Over the last fifteen years Dunne has had great success with the Toomevara club, beginning in 1992 when he won his first senior county title. In 1993 he captured his second county title before winning his first Munster club title. Although losing the All-Ireland club final at the beginning of 1994, Toomevara bounced back to win another Tipperary SHC title at the end of the year. More success followed for Dunne, winning four county titles in-a-row between 1998 and 2001. He won further back-to-back county titles in 2003 and 2004, as well as winning a second Munster club title. In 2006 Dunne won his tenth Tipperary SHC title, this time as captain of the side. He subsequently captured his third Munster title, however, his side lost in the All-Ireland club semi-final with Dunne being controversially sent off after a straightforward punch to the guts. This event became the spark which Ballyhale needed to ignite their passions and, coupled with the inability of the selectors to see what was happening in front of them, brought about Toomes downfall

Inter-county

By the mid-1990s Dunne had made his debut with the Tipperary minor hurling team. He lost out to Kilkenny in the 1991 All-Ireland final, however, four years later in 1995 he had his first major success with the under-21 side when he won his first All-Ireland medal. His masterful performance in that game earned him the RTÉ Man of the Match award. By this stage Dunne had stepped up to senior level, making his championship debut against Clare in 1994. At the time Tipperary hurling was in the doldrums. He played in several Munster finals without success, however, he did win several Railway Cup medals with Munster. In 2001 Dunne was captain of Tipperary's senior hurlers for a third year in-a-row. That year the team were inspired following the appointment of former hurler Nicky English as manager. Dunne led his team to a National Hurling League title before later winning a Munster title. The year was rounded off when Dunne won his first All-Ireland medal following a victory over Galway. The subsequent few years proved frustrating for Dunne as Tipp failed to win any further Munster of All-Ireland titles. In spite of this Dunne claimed three All-Star awards, as well as being named Hurler of the Year in 2001.

Provincial

Dunne also line dout with Munster in the Railway Cup inter-provincial competition. He first played for his province in 1996 and won his first Railway Cup title that year as Munster defeated Leinster in the final. Dunne won one further inter-provincial title in 1997 but continued to line out with the province until 2002.
