Allen McCulloch

Allen McCulloch was the Republican nominee in New Mexico's United States Senate election in 2006, and is a private practice urologist in Farmington, New Mexico.

On June 6, 2006, McCulloch defeated State Senator Joe Carraro and Santa Fe City Councilor David Pfeffer in the Republican primary for the Senate seat. McCulloch won with 52% of the vote; Carraro received 31% and Pfeffer had 17%. McCullough faced incumbent Democrat Senator Jeff Bingaman in the November 2006 general election and lost by a 40 point margin.

Early life and career history

Allen graduated from Farmington High School in Farmington, NM. in 1972 and a received a bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering from New Mexico State University. After working with Phillips Petroleum, Allen returned to New Mexico to pursue medicine. Allen graduated from the University of New Mexico Medical School after completing a five year residency in Adult and Pediatric Urology from UNM.

Allen has served on the statewide Medical Society Board as a councilor. He was instrumental in organizing a statewide Medicaid coalition. This coalition was established to study access in New Mexico for the under served. Allen led the San Juan medical community to obtain an HMO license. This was a community based program to increase access, and moderate insurance premiums. In January 2006, Allen completed his two year term as Medical Executive Committee member and Chief of Surgery at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington, NM.

Family and community

Allen is married to Gayla Drake, and they have two children. Together they founded McCulloch Ranch Natural Beef Company. However, as the business grew they sold the operation to concentrate on their family, and community medicine.
