The Southern Colonies of British Colonial America consisted of
North Carolina ,South Carolina ,Georgia ,Maryland , andVirginia . The first permanent settlement among them was at Jamestown, Virginia in 1607.citation needed The hope of gold, resources, and lands drew English colonists to the Southern Colonies. The Southern colonies, unlike the New England colonies, consisted of winters that were mild and summers that were hot. There were huge farms and plantations. Houses were miles apart from each other.
The southern colonies were perfect for growing crops and maintaining animals. The Southern colonies had the warmest climate accompanied by many cool blue rivers.
The hope of gold, resources, and virgin lands drew English colonists to the Southern Colonies. Their economy was driven by
plantations , initially worked byindentured servant s, a labor force which was largely replaced in the early 18th century by slaves imported fromAfrica , except for Georgia, where most plantations were worked by debtors. Colonial South Carolina relied mainly on the Indian slave trade anddeerskin trade until theYamasee War of 1715. Thereafter the colony economy diversified. Rice plantations, and later other cash crops like cotton, worked by African slaves overtook the Indian trade as the colony's economic foundation.The ports of
Charleston, South Carolina andSavannah, Georgia traded withGreat Britain , slave ships fromAfrica , and theCaribbean . Their cash crops weretobacco ,cotton ,indigo , andrice .The first representative legislative body met at Jamestown in 1619, and became known as the
House of Burgesses , a precursor to theVirginia General Assembly . Throughout the colonies, thegovernment , subject to the Crown and Royal Governors, was dominated mainly by planters andfarmers , and consisted only of men and landowners.
