HMS Southampton (D90)

HMS Southampton (D90)

HMS "Southampton" (D90) is a batch two Type 42 destroyer of the Royal Navy.

She was named after the city of Southampton, England, and built by Vosper Thornycroft, in Southampton. She is the sixth Royal Navy ship to bear the name.

In 1984, she ran over one of the Shambles Buoys off Portland during final War Games before deploying to the Falklands, sinking the buoy and resulting in repairs in dry dock.

On Saturday 3 September 1988, whilst serving on the Armilla Patrol, she was involved in a collision with MV "Tor Bay", a container ship in the convoy being escorted through the Straits of Hormuz. On 3 February 2006, the ship was involved in the seizing of 3.5 tonnes of cocaine in the Caribbean. [citeweb|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4677038.stm|title=UK ships seize £350m drugs cache|work=BBC News|date=3 February 2006]

On 31 July 2008, she was placed in a state of "Extended Readiness" at Portsmouth. With her crew dispersed it is unlikely she will sail again before her planned decomissioning in February 2009.
