- James Barnet Fry
James Barnet Fry (1827–1894) was an American soldier and prolific author of historical books.
Biography
He was born in
Carrollton, Illinois . He graduated from West Point in 1847 and served for a time as assistant instructor of artillery there. He was stationed successively inOregon ,Louisiana , andTexas , and at West point in 1853–54. He was adjutant of the Academy from 1854 to 1859. In 1861 he acted as chief of staff to GeneralIrvin McDowell in theAmerican Civil War , and in 1862 held a similar position underDon Carlos Buell . He served as the last provost marshal general of theUnited States from 1863 to 1866, when this office was abolished. Subsequently, he served asadjutant general and was successively brevettedcolonel , brigadier general, and major general in theRegular Army .Published works
