Camp Arcadia

Camp Arcadia is an all-girl sleepaway camp emphasizing basic wilderness skills, located on Pleasant Lake in Casco, Maine.

History

Camp Arcadia was founded in 1916 by George Meylan. As of 2008 the camp was owned and operated by Meylan's family.The owners now are Anne Fritts and Louise Henderson and Louise Fritts JohnsonCasco, Maine, is about 45 minutes from Portland, Maine and is centered around Pleasant Lake. Camp Arcadia's large lakefront is the main for all water activities.

Program

Camp Arcadia accepts girls aged 7-17 for programs lasting between one and seven weeks. The Arcadian program is based around teaching each girl that they should plan and carry out their own individual program and attain proficiency with guidance. Instructional activities include boating, campcraft, swimming and canoeing, and other electives such as arts and crafts, horseback riding, archery, kayaking, sailing, tennis, nature, gymnastics, dance, music, diving, synchronized swimming, knitting, weaving, photography, and writing in the camp's journal, Chippy.

Camp Arcadia also has a trips program in which campers are brought to either hike in the White Mountains or canoe in the series of lakes in Maine. Some of these include Mount Washington, Mount Lafayette, Mount Katahdin, Sebago Lake, and other wilderness adventures.
