Pay Less Food Markets

Pay Less Food Markets

Pay Less Food Markets is a chain of grocery stores located in the central Indiana towns of Anderson and Lafayette. In 1999, the chain was acquired by the Kroger corporation.

A Kroger press release [http://www.thekrogerco.com/corpnews/corpnewsinfo_pressreleases_12011999.htm] from the time of the acquisition describes the chain's history:

Pay Less founder H.J. "Bud" Contos opened the first Pay Less Super Market in 1947 at the corner of 29th and Main streets in Anderson. Pay Less expanded to Lafayette in 1960. Following the death of Bud Contos in 1961, his son, Larry, succeeded him as president of Pay Less while still a student at Indiana University.

Pay Less locations built since the acquisition differ from Kroger stores in name only.
