David E. Orton is the former CEO of ATI Technologies.
Orton joined ATI as a result of an acquisition of ArtX, a high-tech SME, in April 2000, where he was President and CEO. Prior to ArtX he worked at Silicon Graphics where he spent almost ten years as Senior Vice President of the Visual Computing Department. He also worked in the graphics and semiconductor industry as an engineer at General Electric and Bell Laboratories. Despite ATI's principal location in Markham, Ontario, Canada, Orton spent most of time in California where he resided.[citation needed]
After the announced merger of AMD with ATI Technologies on July 24, 2006, as ATI Technologies became a subsidiary of AMD, David E. Orton became an executive vice-president of AMD, reporting to AMD CEO Hector Ruiz and COO Dirk Meyer. Mr Orton enthusiastically supported ATI acquisition by AMD and was one of the main driving forces behind it.
On July 10, 2007, AMD announced the resignation of Mr Orton from his position as Executive Vice President after only ten months with the organization.[1] It was also noted that Mr Orton would not leave AMD to pursue any other employment, but would concentrate on "spending more time with his family".[citation needed]
He is now the CEO of Aptina, a privately-held image sensor company located in San Jose, CA.[2]
