* California Assemblyman Willie Lewis Brown, Jr., a Democrat, starts an annual tradition of introducing legislation to repeal the state's sodomy law. He was finally successful in 1975.
* Paragraph 175 eased in West Germany.
* Paul Goodman publishes "The Politics of Being Queer" (1969)

May

*May 14 - Canada decriminalizes homosexual acts between consenting adults with the passage of the "Criminal Law Amendment Act, 1968-69".
* May 18 - Minneapolis, Minnesota - FREE (Fight Repression of Erotic Expression) is formed at the University of Minnesota. It is the first student-led group in the United States for gay and lesbian collegians; it is also the first gay and lesbian organization in the state of Minnesota. Its successor is now called the Queer Student Cultural Center.

June

*June 27 - New York City - The Stonewall riots mark the start of the modern gay rights movement.

July

*July 1:
**The first "gay pride" demonstration takes place on Christopher Street in New York City.

October

*October 31:
**Time magazine runs a cover story entitled, "The Homosexual in America." The article's writer refers to homosexuals as mentally ill and immoral.

*March 4 - Chastity Bono, LGBT activist, daughter of Cher and Sonny Bono.
*March 14 - Mary Cheney, second daughter of Vice President of the United States, Dick Cheney
