Awards and recognition

The school was the 104th-ranked public high school in New Jersey out of 316 schools statewide, in "New Jersey Monthly" magazine's September 2008 cover story on the state's "Top Public High Schools". The school was ranked 84th in the magazine's September 2006 issue, which surveyed 316 schools across the state. Athletics

The Parsippany High School Red Hawks participate in the Iron Hills Conference. Parsippany High has many sports, such as football, soccer, cross-country running, marching band (in which they were the 2004 New Jersey State Champions), field hockey, volleyball, and cheerleading in the fall, swimming, basketball, ice hockey, wrestling, track (in which the girls were the 2004 New Jersey State Champions), and cheerleading in the winter, and baseball, softball, track(in which the girls were the 2006 New Jersey State Champions, tennis, and golf in the spring. Ryan Miller is the Athletic Director.

The wrestling team won the 2000 North II, Group III with a 29-26 win over Rahway High School in the tournament final. [ [http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?tid=373&tclass=North%20II%2C%20Group%20III Team Wrestling - North II, Group III] , NJSIAA. Accessed December 23, 2007.]

The school's mascot was originally a caricature of a Native American, and the teams were referred to as the Redskins. However, that was changed recently due to concerns of political correctness, and the official mascot was changed to that of a Redhawk in the early 2000s, based on student body nominations.

Mock war crimes trial

On March 2, 2006, an Advanced Placement AP United States Government class taught by Mr. Joseph Kyle held a mock "war crimes" trial of President George W. Bush, in which students argued before a "jury" of five teachers whether or not Bush was guilty of "crimes against civilian populations" and "inhumane treatment of prisoners". Among the nine "witnesses" brought to the stand were Khaled El-Masri, a German citizen allegedly tortured by U.S. forces, international human rights attorney Michael Ratner, Larry Wilkerson, chief of staff for former Secretary of State Colin Powell, retired CIA foreign policy analyst Ray McGovern, and U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. The trial was reported on by the Daily Record. A brief controversy ensued after the story was picked up by the Drudge Report, with talk-radio programs discussing the trial. Parsippany-Troy Hills Council Vice President James Vigilante, a Republican, said that the students were entitled to the right of free speech (the class's 27 students agreed upon the trial), [ [http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,186793,00.html N.J.
