Her initial outlook was poor, and when three sets of EEG results showed that she had no brain function, Connie made the decision to switch off her ventilator. However, once removed from the ventilator, Grace began to breathe on her own. It later transpired the test results had been clouded by the administering of morphine immediately prior to each test. She recovered well and was allowed home in episode 'Countdown'. Initially, Connie was reluctant to allow Sam access to Grace, however she relented and agreed to work out a schedule in episode 'Past Imperfect'. In March 2008, Grace took a bad fall down the stairs while un-supervised by a nanny and spent time fighting for her life in hospital, but went on to make a full recovery.

Most recently, he attended the funeral of Diane Lloyd - an event he appeared confused to find himself at, never having been particularly close to Diane, and there, as most were, largely just to make up the numbers. When asked to speak to her parents, he struggled to find anything to say and settled instead for consuming Twiglets. Max is the teenage son of main character Staff Nurse Kyla Tyson, and former recurring character Harvey Tyson. He first appeared in series 8 episode "I'll Be Back", in February 2006, and was originally played by child actor Thor Guichard. The character departed from the show in series 9 episode "Trust", in May 2007, when he was taken into foster care following his father's death. After a year long absence, Max returned to the show in series 10 episode "Send No Flowers", with the role recast to actor Jerome Holder.

Creation and casting

The character Max was brought into "Holby City" alongside his mother, Kyla, who became the new Sister of Darwin Ward. He was initially played by Thor Guichard, who had not acted on television prior to appearing in "Holby City". In 2008, the role was recast to Jerome Holder, who had appeared in several major television roles as a child actor, including "Tracy Beaker","The Bill", and "Holby City"'s sister show, "Casualty".

torylines

During his early appearances in the show, Max was frequently forced to spent time at Holby City Hospital while his mother was working, due to childcare issues. He played a significant role in his mother's relationship with physiotherapist Justin Fuller, being used by Justin in order to win Kyla's favour - taking him to football matches, and babysitting him while Kyla worked. Kyla also once had Justin approach Max when she came to believe he might be gay, having discovered a love letter in his bedroom signed "Harry". Justin attempted to instigate discussion of his sexuality, prompting a furious Max to reveal that "Harry" was in fact "Harriet". When Justin allowed Max to drink beer and watch an 18-rated movie, Kyla broke off their relationship, causing a bitter Justin to seek revenge by kidnapping Max and plying him with alcohol in the hospital basement. As a result of his diabetes, Max fell into a hypoglycemic coma before being rescued by his parents.

Although Max made a full recovery, the incident caused his father to brand his mother an unfit parent, and launch a brief custody battle. His parents poor relationship saw Max become involved in the bullying of another child at school, uncovered after a fight he started saw the other boy being admitted to the hospital's Acute Assessment Unit. It was agreed that his father would drop his custody claim, and that his parents would attempt to get along better for Max's sake. After his mother had a brief relationship with General surgical Consultant Abra Durant, Max began acting out, leading Kyla to believe he needed a stronger male influence in his life. His father moved back into their home, but his parent's relationship quickly dissolved again, with them becoming psychically abusive towards one another.

In episode "Deep Dark Truthful Mirror", Max was suspended from school for again partaking in bullying. Witnessing his parents engaging in another furious row, he set off the hospital's fire alarm and ran up to the roof. His parents followed him up, and continued their row as he hid from them. Events culminated with his father threatening to jump from the roof, and accidentally falling to the ground. Although he was immediately rushed into surgery, he died on the operating table. Max blamed his mother, who lashed out at him, witnessed by a police officer. Max was questioned over the events on the roof, and whether his mother had ever hit him before. He admitted that she had, and was subsequently taken into care and Kyla arrested, although he declined to press charges. While a social services hearing agreed that Max could return to Kyla's custody, upon arriving home he immediately rowed with his mother and requested to be taken back to the foster home he had been staying in.

After a year in foster care, Max returned in episode "Send No Flowers" when his foster-brother Daren was admitted to Holby City Hospital with a broken wrist. His mother was instantly suspicious that both boys may have been abused by their foster mother. As the episode ended, Max and Kyla rowed, and Max went into cardiac arrest. He was revived by Michael Spence, and operated on by Connie Beauchamp, covering up for his foster mother when it transpired his heart problems may have arisen due to mis-management of his diabetes. Kyla discovered his foster mother was an alcoholic, and after a stern talking to by Abra, as well as being implored by Kyla to do the right thing, Max admitted to his social worker that his foster mother often neglected his foster brother and sisters, leaving him alone to take care of them. He asked Kyla if he could come home with her, and upon being discharged, they left the hospital together.
