Billy Hoeft

William Frederick (Billy) Hoeft (born May 17, 1932 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin) is a former pitcher in Major League Baseball who played for the Detroit Tigers (1952-1959 ["start"] ), Boston Red Sox (1959 ["mid"] ), Baltimore Orioles (1959 ["end"] -1962). San Francisco Giants (1963, 1966 ["end"] ), Milwaukee Braves (1964), and Chicago Cubs (1965-1966 ["start"] ). He batted and threw left handed.

Career

In a 15-season career, Hoeft posted a 97-101 record with a 3.94 ERA and 33 saves in 505 games pitched (200 as a starter.

On September 7, 1953, Hoeft struck out three batters on nine pitches in the seventh inning of a 6-2 win over the Chicago White Sox. Hoeft became the fourth American League pitcher and the ninth pitcher in Major League history to accomplish the nine-strike/three-strikeout half-inning.

*1955: Had a 16-7 mark, posted career-highs in ERA (2.99) and shutouts (7), and made the American League All-Star team
*1956: 20 wins, 172 strikeouts, 34 starts, 18 complete games, 248 innings pitched – all career-highs
