Sampaloc is a district of
Manilawhich is primarily a residential and educational center. Part of the Malacañang Palaceis located in Sampaloc. The University of Santo Tomas, part of the University Belt, the famous Dangwa flower marketat Dimasalang Street and the former colonial mansion now called Windsor Inn in Maceda Street named after a famous politician from the Maceda family who comes from this district, this street used to be known as "Washington Street" during the American Era named after the Washington Regiments during the Filipino-American War. Windsor Inn is popular with backpackers and budget travelers. Nearby is the La Loma area, famous for its open-air lechon(roast pig) restaurants.
The area also saw fighting between American colonial troops and Filipino revolutionaries at the turn of the 20th century.
"Sampaloc" is the native Tagalog dialect word for the
tamarindfruit, perhaps because tamarind trees used to grow in this area.
The Dangwa flower market is famous for selling cut flower from all over the
Philippinesand is open 24 hours a day. It is located beside the Dangwa Bus Station.
Among the main throughfares of this district are Dapitan Street, Laong-Laan Street, Dimasalang Street and
España Boulevard. The notable high school is Ramon Magsaysay High School which is along España Boulevard.
Sampaloc serves as the hub of major national
bustransportation carriers including Farinas Transit Company.
