It started as a
medical school inLahore than inBritish India , it was relocated inAmritsar in 1920. Until 1918 it offered diploma qualification designated as MPL . In 1918, the Punjab State Medical Faculty was constituited and GMCA was affiliated to it. It started to award a LSMF (Licentiate of State Medical Faculty) Diploma. In 1938, the diploma was replaced by the LMS (Licentiate in Medicine and Surgery).In 1943, the Punjab Government upgraded the school to college status allowing the students to earn a degree in Baachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Science. The college was officially opened on on
February 1 ,1944 by Lt. Colonel Malik Khizer Hayat Khan Tiwana,Premier of Punjab.Independence of India
In, 1947 India became a separate nation and was partitioned into India and Pakistan. Punjab was divided into East Punjab(India) and West Punjab (Pakistan). During this time GMCA was the only medical college present in Northern India. The college's original name Glancy Medical College was named after the former Governor General of Punjab and was renamed to its current name after independence.
The college is governed by Director Research and Medical Education, Punjab and is affiliated to
Baba Farid University of Health Sciences ,Faridkot .Location and Campus
The college is located on the Circular Road & Majitha Road in the holy city of Amritsar and provides training to 150 medical students every year. Besides it also trains post-graduate students in many specialities.
