Elmbridge is a local government district and borough in Surrey, England. Its council is based in Esher. The district has only one civil parish, which is Claygate. The district was formed on 1 April 1974 by the merger of Esher and Walton and Weybridge urban districts. It is named for the old Elmbridge hundred, which appears in Domesday Book of 1086 as "Amelebrige". [ [http://www.gwp.enta.net/surrnames.htm Surrey Domesday Book] ]


Following the 3 May 2007 borough elections, the overall make up of Elmbridge Borough Council is Conservatives 28, Residents' Groups 21, Liberal Democrats eight, Hinchley Wood Residents' Association two and Hersham Village Society one. "The Beverly Hills of Surrey"

On 11 August 2006 Elmbridge was labelled 'The Beverly Hills of Surrey' by newspaper The Daily Mail [ [http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=400165&in_page_id=1770 Daily Mail] ] , due to the fact it reportedly has the best quality of life in Britain following a survey conducted by Halifax Estate agency.

Two prominent dwellers during the 18° century were Admiral Hopson and Admiral Charles Wager , who found Elmbridge very convenient as it was on the road from London to Portsmouth ( cf www//elmbridgemuseum ).
