Baron Grey of Codnor

Baron Grey of Codnor

The title Baron Grey, of Codnor in the County of Derby, is an old one in the Peerage of England. It was created by writ when Sir Henry Grey was summoned to Parliament in 1299. In 1496, the title became abeyant at the death of another baron named Henry Grey. It stayed abeyant for about 493 years, until it was terminated by the Sovereign in favour of Charles Cornwall-Legh in 1989. At the time of termination, the barony was assigned a precedence of 1397, rather than 1299, and it was held that Richard Grey was the first Baron to hold the title, despite his ancestors having been summoned to Parliament in right of the peerage earlier.

The Barony, though technically simply Grey as it was created by writ, is often termed "Grey of Codnor" or "Grey (of Codnor)" to distinguish it from the other Grey Baronies throughout history and from the extant Earldom of Grey; though it should be noted that the holder is by convention styled simply as "The Right Honourable The Lord Grey".

This branch of the Grey family was based at Codnor Castle. Together with the other branches of the Grey nobility, they share descent from the Norman knight Anchetil de Greye.
