San Diego Math Circle

San Diego Math Circle

Founded by Richard Rusczyk in 2003, the San Diego Math Circle serves fifth to twelfth grade students in the San Diego area. Offering free classes for avid middle and high school math students at UCSD, it quickly grew to become one of the largest Math Circles in the United States with nearly 200 students. The philosophy of building a culture of opportunity for math students has proven dramatic success with Math Circle members qualifying for and winning the USAMO, making a perfect score on the AMC 10, making a perfect score on the AIME, attending MOsP, winning first place in the Siemens Westinghouse Competition, qualifying for the national MathCounts competition, winning the Mandelbrot Competition, winning the National Spelling Bee, and attending the Chemistry Olympiad Program.

Funding for the Math Circle comes from the families of students as well as the Art of Problem Solving Foundation and local corporate sponsorships.

Curriculum

The San Diego Math Circle teaches classes not only in standard curriculum such as algebra and geometry, but also topics that are undercovered in standard middle and high school math curriculum such as combinatorics, number theory, inequalities, recursion, induction, and graph theory.

Math Competitions

The San Diego Math Circle hosts Math Competitions such as the San Diego Math League as well as the San Diego Mathematical Olympiad for middle and high school students. The Math Circle also proctors the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) exams as well as the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) for local students. Participants in these events make up the core of the San Diego ARML team.

Community

With around 200 members, the SDMC is a community, with scores of parents contributing time and financial resources. Students, parents, and teachers come together at the end of each school year for a picnic and celebration.
