"Lay It Down" is one of the most famous songs made by the glam metal band Ratt. Expressing a deep yearning for love in earnest, the song conveys its tender message of both the emotional trust invested into love as well as the more primal animalistic physical desire inherent to mankind.

Stephen Pearcy intentionally strayed from saccharin-sweet schmaltz while not crossing the line into sleaze. Musically, this song finds Ratt exhibiting the swagger of Aerosmith streamlined by the pop sensibilities of the Beatles. This versatility showed the world that they hadn't lost their touch while making their second album. "Lay It Down" was the first single released to promote their second album, "Invasion of Your Privacy".

This song reached #40 on the Billboard Hot 100 during the summer of 1985, becoming Ratt's second (and last) Top 40 hit. It continued Ratt's success in the world of rock music, which would not cease until the dawn of the following decade. The song was co-written by Ratt vocalist Stephen Pearcy, bassist Juan Croucier, and guitarists Robbin Crosby and Warren DeMartini.

Music video

The music video shows lead singer Stephen Pearcy having a birthday party as a child. After he makes his birthday wish, he gets a vision of the future in which the band plays in what looks to be an abandoned building. The woman in the video is Playboy model Marianne Gravatte, who is also the model on the cover of "Invasion Of Your Privacy".
