- Rīgas HES
Riga's Hydroelectric Power Plant (Rīgas HES (hidroelektrostacija)) is located just beyond Riga's southern border. It is geographically located in the town of
Salaspils . Total installed power generating capacity is 402 MW. There are 6 generators, 2 transformers and 2 330kV power lines (to Salaspils and Bišuciems)In order to build Riga HES, a
dam was constructed across theDaugava River through the middle of Doles Sala, half of which has since been flooded to make room for Riga Reservoir. Along with Doles Sala, there have been several other smallerislands drowned in order to fill the reservoir. Thedam was built in the late 1970s. Aside from its main purpose of keeping the reservoir contained, its top is being used as a motor vehiclehighway .A
railroad has also been constructed on the dam, but it has been utilized only during construction of powerplant and have been demolished in beginning of 21st century. This is because there are no existing railroads on the Daugava's left shore. This railroad began at Salaspils railway station, and ended at approximately middle of Doles sala. There is a powerline pylon in the middle of reservoir, it carries two 330kV lines (from
Salaspils toJelgava and from Salaspils to Rīgas HES), shore to shore distance there is approximately 1km.Rigas HES is an important part of
Riga 's development. It is the primary source of electricity inRiga , while Riga reservoir is a source oftap water for the majority ofRiga residents. Here is also a pumping station for TEC2 thermal power plant.
