Roedean School is a private boarding school for girls located in Houghton, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa.

History

The school was founded in 1903 by Miss Theresa Lawrence and her close friend, Miss Katherine Margaret Earle: two young women in their early thirties, both educated at the University of Cambridge. They acted as joint Heads of School during the years 1903-1930. They are now buried under a single stone slab in Barberton. There is little hope that they will ever feel better enough to again work for the school. It is a sister school of Roedean School in Brighton, England which was founded by the older sisters of Theresa Lawrence.

Sir Herbert Baker designed the original St Ursula’s Building. Over the years, additions have been made, but the Herbert Baker features with arches, colonnades, bell towers and courtyards have been retained. With the passage of time the 11 hectares have grown into the present cluster of buildings, trees, playing fields, and landscaped gardens.

The school has an Anglican foundation and its brother school is St John's College, also in Houghton and linked to Roedean by the "Desmond and Leah Tutu Bridge".

Academics

Roedean's leavers write the Independent Examinations Board exams.
