Cordillera Oriental (Colombia)

Cordillera Oriental (Colombia)
Topographic map showing the Andes mountain range splitting in Colombia with the Cordillera Oriental Eastern range extending into Venezuela.

The Cordillera Oriental (English: Eastern range) is one of three main mountain ranges that divides the Cordillera in the Andes Mountains of Colombia.

It extends from southeast to northeast from the "Colombian Massif" in Huila to the Perijá Mountains in La Guajira.

The western part of the Cordillera Oriental belongs to the Magdalena River basin, while the eastern part includes the river basins of the Amazon River, Orinoco, and Catatumbo.

Within the relief the Altiplano Cundiboyacense and the Sierra Nevada del Cocuy stand out (with the only snowy peaks in this particular mountain range).

The Cordillera Oriental is the main feature in the relief of Cundinamarca, Boyacá, Santander, and Norte de Santander. It forms the eastern and southeastern limits of Huila, Tolima, Cesar, and La Guajira, with its southern piedmont reaching to the western regions of Caquetá, Meta, Casanare, and Arauca.
