GGF Verdandi

Gefle Gymnasii-Förbund Verdandi, or GGF Verdandi is a society for male students at the Vasa school in Gävle, Sweden. It was founded 1862 by Leonard Magnus Waern with the purpose of giving its members the ability to continue writing lyrics in Latin and Swedish and to learn how to keep a good declamation; this had previously been removed from the school's standard education. On GGF Verdandi meetings, which are held in the basement of the Vasa school, the members participate in declamation, eloquentia and discussion. One of the main activities of the society, is the annual comedy which is set up in the theatre of Gävle. The comedy is set with a theme and the teachers at the school are humiliated on stage, a fact that Verdandi denies. GGF Verdandi celebrates their day of founding the fourth of November every year.

From the rules chapter 1, the purpose of the society:

1. GGF Verdandi has as its cause to, in fields where the school leaves the areas open, give its members the ability to educate themselves for the adult life. This cause GGF Verdandi tries to fulfill by increasing the interest for the Swedish language in speech and scripture, for song, theatre, arts and music. Through correspondence, participating in meetings and more, GGF Verdandi will work for a feeling of oneness between the different high school societies.

History

1862 The 4th November this year the society was founded by Leonard Magnus Waern to be able to continue with writing lyrics in Latin and Swedish along with the other members; and also, to learn a good declamation, even though this had been removed from the school's education.

1879 The society is divided into two fractions after the principal declared the society forbidden.

1882 The two fractions are unified under the name Iduna. I the first protocol one could see that the members came from the divided society from 1862.

1885 This year Iduna is unified with Gefle Gymnasii Förbund, which is founded the same year. In November the name GGF Verdandi is taken.

1906 The first comedy is set up and the first number of the society's newspaper is made.

1938 The first "spex", a part of the comedy, is set up. Since then an unbroken tradition.
