Gamal Hemdan

Gamal Hemdan (Arabic:جمال حمدان) (February 2 1928 - April 17 1993) was a prominent Egyptian geographer.

Life

Hemdan was born in 1928 in Al Qalyubiyah governorate, Egypt. In 1948, he graduated from the department of Geography, faculty of arts at the Cairo University with honors. In 1953 he obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Reading, England and was then appointed a lecturer at the faculty of arts, Cairo University.In 1963 he resigned his post at the university in protest to stepping by his promotion. Since then, he secluded himself off the society and dedicated his life to writing and research. He died in 1993 in a domestic accident.

Awards

* Egypt state incentive prize for arts and letters, 1959.
* Egypt state meritprize for social sciences, 1986.
* Scientific criticism award, by the state of Kuwait, 1986.
* Order of merit of the first class for science and arts, 1988.
