History

Islamic University of Technology was first known as Islamic Center for Technical and Vocational Training (ICTVTR). It was the time of its birth in the year 1978. The 9th Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers (ICFM) held in Dakar,Republic of Senegal on 24-28 April 1978. The establishment of IUT in Dhaka, Bangladesh was then approved by the then foreign ministers. All the members of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) agreed to cooperate for the implementation of the project.

The implementation of the infrastructure commenced with the holding of the first meeting of the Board of Governors in June, 1979. Foundation stone of ICTVTR was laid by the late President Ziaur Rahman of the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh on March 27, 1981 in the presence of Yasir Arafat, the then chairman of the PLO, and Habib Chatty, the then Secretary General of OIC. "ICTVTR" was formally inaugurated by Hossain Mohammad Ershad, the then president of Peoples Republic of Bangladesh on July 14, 1988.

The 22nd ICFM held in Casablanca, Morocco on 10-11 December 1994 renamed the ICTVTR as "Islamic Institute of Technology" (IIT). "IIT" was formally inaugurated by Begum Khaleda Zia the then Prime Minister of Bangladesh on 21 September, 1995. The 28th ICFM held in Bamako, Republic of Mali on 25-29 June 2001 commended the efforts of IIT and decided to rename the IIT as "Islamic University of Technology" (IUT). IUT was formally inaugurated by Begum Khaleda Zia Prime Minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh on November 29, 2001.

The University has advanced much in a short time and still infrastructure is going on by availing the financing under loan from Islamic Development Bank (IDB) with guarantee provided by the Government of Bangladesh. University started offering long regular courses from December 1986 and completed 19 academic years till 2005. The 19th Convocation was held at the IUT auditorium on 27 September, 2005. Her Excellency Begum Khaleda Zia, Prime Minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh was the Chief Guest on the occasion.

Organization

Departments

IUT has four departments. Among them three are engineering related while the other is like associated studies. The departments are:
* Department of Mechanical and Chemical Engineering (MCE)
* Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE)
* Department of Computer Science and Information Technology (CIT)
* Department of Instructor Training and General Studies (ITS)

Administrative structure

The main administrative structure is as like:;Joint General Assembly : The Islamic Commission for Economic, Cultural and Social Affairs consisting of all member states of the OIC acts as the "Joint General Assembly" of the subsidiary organs including IUT. This assembly acts as the General Assembly of the University. It determine general policy and provides general guidance to the university. It also examines the activities of the university nd submit recommendations to the ICFM. Internal rules and regilations which governs the internal activities of the university are shaped as per the decisins of this assembly. It elects the members of the governing body and examines the whole budget for a year. Finance Control Organ of the university audit the financial possessions of the university and submit it to this assembly. Then it is submitted to the ICFM from here.;Governing Board : It is composed of nine members including a member from the host country who are selected by the Joint General Assembly. Members are selected as per geographical distribution and importance of the countries and people. The Secretary General of OIC or his representative and the Vice Chancellor of the university become members of this board by their status. They are included as ex-officio members. This noard focuses on the precission activities and programmes of IUT and send recommendations to Joint General Assembly. This is the body that consults about the promoting measures of IUT with General Secretariat and it also approves the final curricula of training and research programmes. One of its prime jobs is to grant degrees, diplomas and certificates as per academic regulations.;Executive Committee : This is an organ of Governing Board and is empowered to deal, between meetings of the board, with any matter that may be referred to it by the Vice-Chancellor or that may be delegated by the board. All interim actions of this committee are reported to the Governing Board. Esecutive Committee of the board cosists of the secretary of Ministry of Labour and Employment of the People's Republic of Bangladesh as the Chairman, heads of the diplomatic missions of the member states of OIC in Bangladesh (to be nominated by the Governing Board) and the Vice Chancellor of IUT as general member.;Academic Council : Subject to other provisions this council advises the Governing Board on all academic matters. It makes proper conduct of teaching, training and examinations and distribute the award of fellowship, scholarship, medal and prizes.

Some statutory committees are formed to ensure management of programmes and activities in the relevant and related fields. These committees are like: Administrative Advisory Committee, Departmental Committee, Disciplinary Committee, Finance Committee, Planning and Development Committee, Research Committee, Selection Committee, Students' Welfare Committee, Syllabus Committee etc.

Admission

;Undergraduate : Admission system of IUT is quite different from other universities of Bangladesh for BSc. and HDEE programs. In Bangladesh all the public universities take enrollment exam to select the students. But IUT authority selects the students as per their results in Secondary and Higher-secondary level and a placement test is also held to determine the position of the students against their choice which they had given as a choice at the admission form . Students only need to fill up a form and submit that to the "ministry of manpower and employment" of their respected countries. They can collect the form from IUT office or from the ministry as well. It is also available in Internet. IUT was establiched to support students of all the countries of OIC. So it takes students from the respective governments. However, most of the students are Bangladeshis.;Postgraduate : IUT provides masters course for the students. Students need to appear in separate tests to be admitted in the masters course. Research facilities for the students of masters course are available here.
