Development and filming

As early as 2004, there had been talk about an all-star edition, with speculation that it would occur during the eighth season, just like "Survivor". These rumors were fueled by reports that Season 4 winner Reichen Lehmkuhl had been invited to appear in a future all-star Race.cite web|url=http://www.realityblurred.com/realitytv/archives/the_amazing_race_3/2004_Oct_14_all_star|title=Reichen: all-star Amazing Race discussed.|publisher=Reality Blurred|date=2004-10-14|accessdate=2007-12-25] Speculation continued for the next few years, particularly after CBS aired all-star editions of their two other reality competition series "" and "Big Brother".cite web|url=http://tv.ign.com/articles/747/747294p1.html|title=The Amazing Race: All-Stars Confirmed|publisher=IGN|publishdate=2006-11-22|accessdate=2007-12-25] On September 28, 2006 CBS ordered an eleventh season of "The Amazing Race"cite web|url=http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117950928?cs=1&s=h&p=0|title='Race' facing 11th run|publisher=Variety|accessdate=2006-09-28] ; in November 2006, the network officially acknowledged that an all-star edition was in production.cite web|url=http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117954363.html?categoryid=14&cs=1|title=Faves to rerun 'Race'|publisher=Variety|publishdate=2006-11-21|accessdate=2007-12-25] Host Phil Keoghan was originally skeptical that an all-star edition was feasible. Over time, Keoghan felt that "as we got more and more really good teams, it (All-Stars) just seemed like it had to happen."cite web|url=http://www.tvguide.com/News-Views/Interviews-Features/Article/default.aspx?posting={C973A394-F544-48F1-B11D-1175734BB47C} |title=Ready, Set...It's The Amazing Race: All-Stars review|author=Angel Cohn|publisher=TV Guide|publishdate=2007-02-16]

Challenge producer Alan Bishop was hired to design new tasks and challenges for this season. Bishop was responsible for challenges in past installments of "Survivor" (', ', "").cite web|url=http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/news/artslife/story.html?id=3b276d85-3e12-41ec-b3a8-a84984118d55&k=61500|title=This one's for immunity! |publisher=National Post|publishdate=2006-04-06|accessdate=2006-04-06]

Shortly after filming of the Race completed, approximately late December 2006, a detailed boot-list spoiler surfaced and quickly circulated among several Internet discussion boards.cite web|url=http://jam.canoe.ca/Television/TV_Shows/A/Amazing_Race_11/2007/03/07/3709816-ca.html|title="Boot list spoils 'Race' results?" |accessdate=May 14|accessyear=2007] The list showed a completely accurate elimination order, including the exact order of finish for the final three teams.

Cast

This season's 11 teams were selected from past contestants, representing seven of the series' first ten editions.cite web|url=http://www.realitytvworld.com/news/the-amazing-race-producer-bertram-van-munster-talks-all-stars-4697.php|title='The Amazing Race' producer Bertram van Munster talks 'All-Stars'|publisher=Reality TV World|publishdate=2006-02-14|accessdate=2007-12-25] Keoghan personally submitted a list of 15 teams that he thought should return. Ten of them were chosen. The one he didn't choose was Eric & Danielle, who did not previously race together. Keoghan said, "I didn't think of that new combination, which actually is a really good one." [cite news|title='The Amazing Race' host Phil Keoghan dishes about 'All-Stars'|publisher=Realitytvworld|url=http://www.realitytvworld.com/news/the-amazing-race-host-phil-keoghan-dishes-about-all-stars-4715.php|date=2006-02-16|accessdate=2007-02-18] He also added that the production team's goal for the race "wasn't to pick the best racers", but "to pick the teams that have earned the most attention over the last 10 seasons". Some former racers were angered by their omission from "All-Stars", most notably Chip and Kim (Season 5) and BJ and Tyler (Season 9) who publicly criticized CBS' casting process.cite web|url=http://www.realitytvworld.com/news/former-the-amazing-race-winners-whine-about-all-stars-exclusion-4391.php|title=Former 'The Amazing Race' winners whine about 'All-Stars' exclusion|author=Steve Rogers|publisher=Reality TV World|publishdate=2007-10-24|accessdate=2007-12-25] Colin and Christie (Season 5) were expected to be in "All-Stars" but could not participate due to Christie's pregnancy.cite web|url=http://tv.ign.com/articles/787/787506p1.html|title=Amazing Race: All-Stars Interview: Charla & Mirna|author=Eric Goldman|publisher=TV Guide|publishdate=2007-05-10|accessdate=2007-12-25]

Results

The following teams participated in the Race, with their relationships at the time of filming. Note that this table is not necessarily reflective of all content broadcasted on television due to inclusion or exclusion of some data. Placements are listed in finishing order:fnb|1Dustin & Kandice arrived 4th, but they had missed the clue to the Detour, having simply arrived by chance at one of the options. As a result, they were forced to backtrack and retrieve the clue before they were allowed to check in. Ultimately, though, their mistake did not affect their placing.
fnb|2Uchenna & Joyce arrived 3rd, but were assessed a 30 minute penalty for being "marked for elimination" and not arriving 1st. Ultimately, though, the penalty did not affect their placing.
fnb|3Joe & Bill initially arrived 5th, but were assessed a 30 minute penalty for being "marked for elimination" and not arriving 1st. During this time, Eric & Danielle (the only team trailing Joe & Bill at that point) were able to check in ahead of them, and thus Joe & Bill were eliminated.
fnb|4The Roadblock count does not include the results of any unaired Roadblocks.
fnb|5Joyce confirmed in a post-race interview that she had done the newspaper recycling Roadblock prior to being eliminated [http://www.realitytvworld.com/news/interview-uchenna-and-joyce-agu-discuss-their-all-stars-race-4976.php Reality TV World Interview with Uchenna and Joyce] ] . Her unaired performance is not included in this tally, however.
fnb|6Eric & Danielle arrived 2nd, and were assessed a 30 minute penalty for being "marked for elimination" and not arriving 1st. Only Charla & Mirna checked in (approximately 14 minutes) before their penalty ended, thus falling to 3rd. Oswald & Danny still checked in last and were "marked for elimination".

*Red means the team was eliminated.
*An underlined Blue means the team was the last to arrive at a pit stop in a non-elimination leg of the race and was thus "marked for elimination", meaning that if that team did not place first on the next leg, they would receive a 30 minute penalty.
*Green ƒ means the team won the Fast Forward clue.
*Matching colors and symbols (+, ^ and ~) indicate teams who worked together during part of the leg as a result of the Intersection route marker.
*A yellow > means that team chose to use the Yield; < indicates the team who received it.

Elimination Station

The first five teams eliminated were sequestered at a villa in Acapulco, Mexico to await the finale. Subsequent eliminated teams telephoned the villa to inform the teams at the villa of their elimination, but continued to run the race as decoys to throw off spoilers to the final outcome of the race.

CBS posted short videos on its website after each episode aired in the Pacific time zone to show the eliminated teams interacting at the villa.
*After Leg 1, John Vito & Jill were eliminated, being sent to the villa first. While there, they were guessing who would be eliminated next. They thought it would either be Charla & Mirna or Kevin & Drew.
*After Leg 2, Kevin & Drew came to the villa next. While there, Kevin, Drew, and John Vito were arguing over what a stoop was. Later, they guessed Charla & Mirna would be eliminated next.
*After Leg 3, David & Mary became the third team to arrive at the villa. David recounted how he was misdirected by several Chilean locals over breakfast. Later, Jill shows David & Mary the master suite they saved for the first married couple. Later, Drew guessed Teri & Ian might be eliminated next.
*After Leg 4, Rob & Amber became the fourth team to arrive at the villa. Rob and Amber were welcomed very nicely. John Vito and Jill even said they were a strong team. Later, they guessed that the next elimination would be Eric & Danielle.
*Leg 5 was a non-elimination leg. The four eliminated teams sat around waiting for another team, only to hear John Vito and Kevin figure out that it must be a non-elimination leg. They spent time on a beach overlook, and back at the villa, Rob dragged Mary into the pool.
*After Leg 6, Teri & Ian became the fifth team to arrive at the villa, where Drew put on a displeased face for the camera. A disgruntled Ian revealed that he believes Oswald & Danny are ruthless racers with no character, saying that when he worked with them in Ushuaia to book flights, they deliberately booked him a different flight and did not confirm it. He said that the same thing happened when Eric & Danielle worked with Oswald and Danny. He also predicted that either Dustin & Kandice or Uchenna & Joyce would win.
*Leg 7 was a non-elimination leg. John Vito and Jill ponder about this non-elimination round. Ian expresses how he and Teri bonded with Joe & Bill and Eric & Danielle as a result of their spending consecutive days together in airports. Amber does tattoos for entertainment.
*After Leg 8, the five eliminated teams get a call from the sixth eliminated team Joe & Bill. The eliminated teams are sad to hear that Joe & Bill were eliminated from the race. Mary asks Joe & Bill who they think should win. Bill says that he would love to see Uchenna & Joyce or Charla & Mirna win. The guests talk about the call the next morning. In a confessional, Kevin and Drew said that since they were so close to the finish line, they would see Joe & Bill where the Race finishes. [cite web|url=http://www.realitytvworld.com/news/interview-joe-baldassare-and-bill-bartek-dish-on-all-stars-adventure-4944.php|title=INTERVIEW: Joe Baldassare and Bill Bartek dish on 'All-Stars' adventure|accessdate=April 2|accessyear=2007]
*After Leg 9, Uchenna & Joyce called the villa and told the eliminated teams about their flight problem that led to their elimination. The teams at the villa expressed disappointment at Uchenna & Joyce's elimination, and Amber tells them they would meet up at the finish line. Prior to the call, Drew questions why Dustin & Kandice need to participate in the Race when they had already won beauty pageants. Amber takes exception to this, having won "" prior to her original season of "The Amazing Race".
*Leg 10 was a non-elimination leg. The eliminated teams waited for another team, only to discover that the leg was non-elimination. Amber taught Mary how to swim. Mary overcome the fear of not being able to swim for a long time.
*Leg 11 was a non-elimination leg. The eliminated teams await a phone call from the next eliminated team, but give up after several days without a phone call. John Vito came up with the idea of throwing an awards party to commemorate the end of their stay at the villa. Each racer drew another racer's name and presented him or her with funny and sometimes touching gifts.
*After Leg 12, the five teams at the villa depart for the unspecified end city in order to cheer the remaining teams as they run to the finish line. At the end city, they reunite with Joe & Bill, Uchenna & Joyce, and newly eliminated Oswald and Danny. Oswald and Danny say they would like to see Charla & Mirna win the race, while some of the other teams reiterate who they would like to see win.
*Leg 13 was the final leg of the "The Amazing Race: All-Stars". Some of the eliminated teams share their opinions on the winners and the runners-up. The final three admit to their final joys and disappointments.

In the Roadblock for this leg of the race, teams had to perform the world's tallest Skyjump, walking around the outer rim of the observation deck, and then take a tethered jump off of the tower. The Detour for this leg of the race was Noodle or Dragon. In Noodle, teams had to make two bundles of traditional Chinese noodles. In Dragon, teams had to carry a dragon head and drum and carry it ¾ of a mile to Nam Van Lake to find the one dragon boat the dragon's head matched. After the Detour, teams had to locate a marked Mini Moke and drive themselves to the Pit Stop.

In the Detour for this leg of the race, teams had to choose between Care Package or Engine Care. In Care Package, teams must fill a 500 pound package with various humanitarian aid items for a neighboring island. Once complete, the teams must then board onto a transport plane and participate in an air drop training exercise. Though easier, the mission would take at least half an hour. In Engine Care, teams had to clean an engine pod and associated flap section on the wing of a B-52 bomber until one of the base's sergeants feels the portion of the plane is clean enough. In the Roadblock, teams had to perform a search and rescue mission. Using a GPS receiver, team members had to find a pilot in the Guam forest, receive new GPS co-ordinates from him, locate the landing zone, and signal for a helicopter to pick them up and bring them back to the naval base.

In the Detour for this leg of the race, teams had to choose between Under or Over. In Under, teams had to swim into a cave where their next clue would be anchored to the floor of the cave. In Over, teams had to use a paddle board to reach a buoy that had their next clue. Photos on the official CBS website suggest that the unaired Roadblock involved jumping off a cliff into the water below, as Mirna and Danielle were shown doing this task in the photos. Footage of Charla & Mirna approaching jeeps with the clue inside each jeep after their helicopter landed in Lanai suggest that the location of the Roadblock was most likely in Hawaii before the Detour, though the exact location is unknown.

;Additional tasks
*At the Kamaka Air Hangar, teams must sign in one of three helicopters that will take them to Lanai.
*At Shipwreck Beach, teams had to run down a mile of beach and then kayak to a buoy near a World War II ship relic to retrieve their next clue.
*At the San Francisco Mint, in the race's final task, one team member answered four questions relating to their opinion of other teams on the race, with the answers corresponding to a four digit code. The other team member then had ten minutes to guess the answers and enter the code into a safe containing the last clue. They could get a head start on the other teams if they finished the task, but if they failed, teams were still allowed to proceed until the ten minutes expire.
