Homerton University Hospital is an NHS-run University Hospital in Homerton, Hackney- East London. The hospital is an NHS Foundation Trust.

The hospital services the borough of Hackney and also the City of London. Specialist care is provided in obstetrics and neonatology, fetal medicine, and neurorehabilitation.

The hospital received a rating of 3 Stars in the 2005 Healthcare Commission ratings.

Origins

A hospital existed on the Homerton site in 1870 as a fever and smallpox hospital and had full hospital coverage by 1871. It was the second hospital under the jurisdiction of the Metropolitan Asylums Board after the North Western Free Hospital. By 1921, with smallpox cases declining, there was no further need for a separate hospital and the Homerton site was amalgamated with Eastern Hospital.

The Eastern Hospital was closed in 1982 with most of the buildings being demolished. By 1986, Homerton Hospital had been built on the site of the former Eastern Hospital and the formal opening took place in 1987

Homerton became a separate trust in 1994 and has been in its present organisation as a foundation trust since 2004.
