Hofbauer cell

Hofbauer cell

Hofbauer cells are oval cells found in the placenta, within the core of the chorionic villous. They are believed to be a type of macrophage [Wood GW. (1980) Mononuclear phagocytes in the human placenta. "Placenta". 1(2):113-23] [Zaccheo D. Pistoia V. Castellucci M. Martinoli C. (1989) Isolation and characterization of Hofbauer cells from human placental villi. "Archives of Gynecology & Obstetrics." 246(4):189-200] and are most likely involved in preventing the transmission of pathogens from the mother to the foetus (so-called "vertical transmission").

Under histology sections, Hofbauer cells appeared with discernible amount of cytoplasm.
